Sex & Nudity

  • Beth and a teenage boy are shown finishing having sex, he is shown thrusting on top of her. They are fully clothed when he rolls off of her; his shirt is unbuttoned and we can briefly see her bra. No nudity shown.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Addiction of two main characters to both prescription drugs (Librium) and alcohol are at the core of the story, including daily drugging of children as young as eight years old. Characters get high and drink regularly, some implication that this is a performance enhancement for competitive chess.
  • Underage consumption is portrayed graphically.
  • Part of the plot is based on substance abuse and it is visualized countless times.
  • A main theme throughout this show is this woman's addiction to drugs/ alcohol. It as an active part or back drop to each episode. Female orphans drugged as part of the institution's control measures. A parent is an alcoholic and drinks every episode at all times of day.
  • Beth is a drug addict, smoker and alcoholic.
  • Children in an orphanage are given tranquilizers to keep them docile, causing chemical dependence in some children. Beth enjoys the pills, often takes more than prescribed so she can hallucinate at bedtime -- at one point even stealing more pills and overdosing. Her adoptive mother, Alma, is a functional alcoholic who encourages Beth to become her drinking buddy. Scenes of Beth guzzling wine and spirits, as well as smoking weed.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The dead body of the protagonist's birth mother is shown laying on a roadway, the victim of an automobile crash. The body is shown from a distance, covered by a sheet, and minimal blood is shown.

Sex & Nudity

  • The main character is implied nude post sex. There is a man over her, also implied nude, but they are not having sex at the time, and the scene only lasts about 10 seconds.

Violence & Gore

  • A character dies, she is shown dead, and it is described what happened. The actual death is not shown graphically, but it is still upsetting.
  • Beth's mother struggles with suicidal urges, causes a seemingly intentional car crash with Beth in the backseat. Beth deals with some verbal bullying from popular girls in school.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A young girl is seen consuming a large amount of librium (tranquilizer) capsules; after taking an excessive number of pills, the girl drops the jar of pills and falls to the floor, suggesting an overdose.
  • Parent attempts homicide/suicide and scene/mood is intense.There is an overriding foreboding dark feel to the show with scenes girls are in the presence of men and the possibility of sexual abuse is hinted at by the cinematography and mood, etc
